Entre Ação e Paisagem – Between Action and Landscape

Between Action and Landscape exhibition

Every landscape is a construction.

Before it is seen, it is occupied. Before it is contemplated, it is transformed. Cities grow, accumulate layers, absorb gestures, demolitions, memories, and traces of permanence. What we call landscape is often the visible result of a succession of human actions.

It is from this territory that GAFI’s work emerges.

In Entre Ação e Paisagem (Between Action and Landscape), the artist brings together two central developments of his recent practice: the paintings from the Humanized Landscapes series and a group of hand-crafted sculptural furniture pieces. Although distinct in language, both originate from the same observation: the continuous transformation of urban space.

Living and working in Santo André, a city whose history is deeply intertwined with the industrialization of the state of São Paulo, GAFI observes a territory shaped by successive layers of construction. Among buildings, vacant lots in transition, concrete structures, spontaneous vegetation, and temporary occupations, he encounters a landscape that never presents itself as a finished condition, but rather as an ongoing process.

This condition permeates the entire exhibition.

In the paintings, dense surfaces and chromatic fields dominated by shades of blue expand the notion of landscape beyond representation. These works do not seek to depict a specific place, but rather to capture its atmosphere. Layers of paint accumulate depth, interruption, and movement, creating territories where architecture, nature, and memory coexist in a state of constant negotiation.

The sculptural furniture follows a similar logic. Produced from materials associated with the construction industry, such as wood, mortar, resin, and pigments, these works reveal structures that appear to exist in a continuous state of formation. More than functional objects, the pieces assume a sculptural presence, carrying within their materiality the traces of gesture, construction, and time.

By bringing together painting, sculpture, and design, GAFI dissolves disciplinary boundaries and proposes an expanded reading of the object. Tables and chairs move beyond the realm of utility to become extensions of the landscape itself. They are fragments of the city translated into form, matter, and presence.

The brutalism of concrete, the persistence of nature that insists on emerging even under adverse conditions, and the everyday experience of a metropolis in constant transformation constitute the artist’s visual vocabulary. His work does not seek to represent the city in a documentary manner, but rather to construct a sensitive interpretation of its processes.

Between action and landscape lies a space of tension. A territory where matter records the passage of time and where every construction carries the memory of those that came before it.

It is within this interval that GAFI’s work resides.

The exhibition presents landscape not as scenery, but as consequence. Not as a static image, but as a living organism, continuously shaped by human action.

exposição Entre Ação e Paisagem

Toda paisagem é uma construção.

Antes de ser vista, ela é ocupada. Antes de ser contemplada, é transformada. A cidade cresce, acumula camadas, incorpora gestos, demolições, memórias e permanências.
