Enchantment as a Function exhibition presents works by Leo Capote, Patricia Faragone, and Julio Roberto Katinsky
“Enchantment as a Function” is the title of the exhibition, presented by BS Galleria, which brings together the latest works of Julio Katinsky, Patricia Faragone, and Leo Capote.
Enchantment is a word whose Latin etymology, incantamentum, from incantare, means to sing so as to impress, to marvel, to seduce, to bewitch. Its meaning is learned early in life, more from children’s stories than from Homer, through the enchantment of the sirens’ song.
What is curious about the sirens’ song, perhaps, is not the song itself, but the figure of Ulysses, also called Odysseus, whose epithet is polymetis. A Greek word that defines the quality of one who possesses much (poly) cunning (metis).
Metis is the type of intelligence attributed to the one who invented the Trojan Horse and crossed the sea of the sirens without depriving himself of hearing their song. But it is also the intelligence of the boy who folds the corners of a sheet of paper and transforms it into a swallow, playing at the idea of flight. And metis, too, resides in the design of the Swallow table.
Thus, all human creation is ultimately a product of métis. And the ancients believed that technique, in its primeval sense, has nothing to do with art or craft, but rather with letting appear, with allowing to emerge, with revealing and unveiling that which is preserved within the tectonic framework of things.
This is what the architects and designers do here: they employ métis. Julio Katinsky reveals a new function for an old drawing board, transforming it into a bar. Patricia Faragone blows glass and reveals new light, color, and magic, not to mention utility and function. Leo Capote transforms an old tree that fell in a storm on Rua Vitória, in the Santa Cecília neighborhood, into a series of benches and stools.
But beyond the use of intelligence in creation, in Enchantment as a Function Julio Katinsky, Patricia Faragone, and Leo Capote, the authors of the exhibited works, navigate the seas of affective memory. Their objects are like lullabies, something of the order of comfort, of that which we recognize as ours and as part of ourselves: of our childhood and of our Brazilian home.
They are like memory itself, a kind of reminiscence. Something I would not quite know how to describe. Rita Lee and Tutti Frutti playing on the record player, that thing called Rock Enrow. The rustic stool leaning against the porch of the Casa Bandeirista. Afternoon tea with cake, coconut candy, and anise sweets wrapped in crepe paper at Grandma’s house. The outbuilding transformed into a tool shed, always a cabinet of curiosities. The backyard with its jaboticaba and quaresmeira trees.
These are the memories that Julio Katinsky, Patricia Faragone, and Leo Capote evoke in Enchantment as a Function. Because if there is one thing enchantment does, it is to bring back, like waves at low tide, little by little, the memories we had forgotten, those stored deep within us, which make us who we are.

“Encantamento enquanto função” é o título desta exposição, apresentada pela BS Galleria, que abarca o mais recente trabalho de Julio Katinsky, Patricia Faragone e Leo Capote. Encantamento, palavra, cuja etimologia latina incantamēntum, de incantare, significa cantar para impressionar, maravilhar, seduzir e enfeitiçar. E cujo sentido aprende-se desde cedo, mais com as narrativas de criança do que em Homero, com o encantamento pelo canto das sereias.
O que é curioso no canto das sereias, talvez, não seja o canto das sereias ele mesmo. Mas o da figura de Ulisses, também chamado Odisseu, cujo epíteto é polymétis. Uma palavra em grego que define a qualidade daquele que detém muita (poli) astúcia (métis).
A métis é o tipo de inteligência de quem inventou o cavalo de Troia e atravessou o mar das sereias sem se privar de ouvir seu canto. Mas, também, é a inteligência do menino que dobra as pontinhas da folha de papel e faz dela andorinha para brincar com a andorinha de voar pelo céu. E, métis, também, é o projeto da mesa andorinha.
De modo que toda criação humana não deixa de ser produto da métis. E os antigos acreditavam que a técnica, em seu sentido primevo, nada tem a ver com arte ou artesania, mas com o deixar aparecer, o surgir, o revelar, o desvelar aquilo que está preservado no âmbito tectônico das coisas.
Coisa que os arquitetos e o designer fazem aqui: o uso da métis. Julio Katinsky revela nova função de uma antiga prancheta transformando-a em bar.
Patricia Faragone sopra o vidro e revela dele nova luz, cor, magia, sem contar utilidade e função. E Leo Capote faz de uma velha árvore caída numa tempestade na Rua Vitória, no bairro de Santa Cecília, uma série de bancos e banquetas.
Mas mais do que o uso da inteligência para a criação, em Encantamento enquanto função, Julio Katinsky, Patricia Faragone e Leo Capote, os autores das peças expostas, navegam pelos mares da memória afetiva. Seus objetos são como canções de ninar, algo da ordem do conforto, daquilo que reconhecemos como nosso e como parte de nós mesmos: da nossa velha infância e da nossa casa brasileira.
São como uma lembrança, uma espécie de reminiscência. Algo que não saberia bem como descrever. Rita Lee e Tutti Frutti tocando na vitrola Esse tal de Rock Enrow. O banquinho caipira encostado no alpendre da Casa Bandeirista. O chá da tarde com bolo, cocada e bala de anis enrolada em papel crepom na casa da vovó. A edícula transformada em quartinho de ferramentas (sempre um gabinete de curiosidades). O quintal dos fundos com suas jabuticabeiras e quaresmeiras.
São todas as recordações que Julio Katinsky, Patricia Faragone e Leo Capote provocam em Encantamento enquanto função. Pois se há algo que todo encantamento faz é trazer, como ondas do mar, na maré baixa, de pouco a pouco, as memórias que a gente havia esquecido, mas estavam guardadas no fundo da gente e, que fazem da gente, a gente mesmo.
