Rodrigo Almeida

Born in Sorocaba, São Paulo, Brazil, 1975

Brazilian artist and designer Rodrigo Almeida works at the intersection of art, design, and craftsmanship. Self-taught, he has developed a distinctive visual language through experimentation with materials, techniques, and cultural references.

His work explores the diverse influences that shape Brazilian identity, particularly the convergence of Indigenous, African, and European cultural traditions. Ropes, textiles, wood, industrial components, and everyday objects come together in compositions that challenge the conventions of furniture design and establish new relationships between form, function, and expression.

Assemblage is central to his creative process. By removing materials from their original contexts, Almeida creates pieces with a strong sculptural presence, in which contrasting textures, colors, and techniques reveal an ongoing investigation into material culture and belonging.

His career includes projects for Christian Lacroix Maison in France and Vista Alegre in Portugal. His works are held in the collection of the Centre National des Arts Plastiques (CNAP) in France and in the permanent collection of the Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, following the donation of Li Edelkoort’s entire collection to the museum.
